GTX stuffs

Copied from TSC:

Picked it up this weekend. The body is in amazing shape; not one dent and only minor rock chips. It ran perfect when I picked it up, made boost smoothly all the way to redline. About 750 miles into the trip home, it decided it didn't want to pull itself anymore. Still made boost, but couldn't pull itself down the road. When we popped the hood, the manifold, turbo, o2 sensor, and the top half of the downpipe looked like they had a torch held to them.

We started taking guesses as to what was wrong; siezed turbo or a clogged cat were the 2 main assumptions. I pulled the cat tonight and it was already hollow. Started it up with open downpipe just in case, and it wasn't any different. Took the intake piping off to check the turbo, and it felt brand new. I haven't done any more diagnosing yet, but I'll update as I find out more.

Pics!

We left the car in Cahoki, IL, where it broke down, and went home since we had no tools with us and hadn't been to sleep in over 24 hours. James was nice enough to borrow 1988bullit's trailer and tow it home for me. This was also slightly tragic. The trailer decided to throw a tire at an SUV next to us, so we stopped at WalMart for a new tire in Mt Vernon, IL.

Finally got to the car and got it loaded up on the trailer. We made it home with no misfortune, thank god.

I have a pic of it in the garage on jackstands, but haven't uploaded it from my iphone yet.

I would suggest checking the timing, red glow is generally a timing issue when cruising, that and or being lean as all balls. Check your AF. I suspect it is one of those two things.Other than that, hot damn that this is sexy!!!!

Timong belt jumped 1 tooth on the crankshaft. Put it back in time and it's back to normal. smile It still has no power, but that's pretty normal for a 4 cylinder from the 80's.

how does it jump timing? you got a funky tensioner setup??? you had to of heard it pinging...no???

also put a larger snail on there and do what you do lol.

Non-interference motor, and it never pinged. it just lost power on the interstate but still started and idled beautifully. It still has no power, but is just like when I picked it up.

I played with the ignition timing a bit and got it to run as well as I think it should, 10* BTDC @ idle, perfectly within spec. It was set at 2* BTDC before I adjusted it, lol. Now I have another problem (s). It runs fine, but idles way too high. Previous owner already the idle set screw mashed as far in as it would go, which probably explains the retarded ignition timing. I tried every possible junction where a vacuum leak could be occuring but couldn't find anything. I can't get the plug off of the IAC to see if it's stuck open, so that could be the culprit. I just don't want to force it and break it.

Also, on the test drive, the E-clip popped off the wastegate arm (again, dammit!), and I can't get it back on with the turbo on the car. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the turbo off, pop the clip back on, then get to beat on it a bit before it gets an alignment this week.

Protegay
Took the turbo and manifold off, reattached the wastegate arm, replace the o2 housing with one that had all 3 studs intact, and replace the downpipe flange gasket.

I removed all emissions components from the car, sealed off all extra vacuum ports, gave everything another once-over, then fired her up. She started on the first crank, and the idle problem seems to be gone. I took it out and beat on it for a while, and it's pretty damn impressive for a 24 year old car with the stock motor and turbo.

So far it still needs:
*Tires
*Clutch
*Oil return line from turbo to oil pan (has heater hose on it now, couldn't find 5/8" fuel hose in town)
*Lowering springs
*Struts (has Tokico rally struts in front, stock replacements rear). Looking for something with a little more aggressive dampening and rebound.

Oil change, coolant flush, and alignment are all happening tomorrow, as well as a bath, clay-bar, and a coat of wax. The paint feels like sandpaper.

I'll get pics up as soon as she's clean.

I'd give it a try :-) I've got like 120hp of FURY.
I have 135hp of 80's fury!! lol

Pics as promised:

Enjoying her first bath:

I took it by Heath's, he got the idea to go make it dirty again. It was pretty fun:

I love rally struts/tires. More of this dirt stuff will happen, and hopefully often. smile

Any plans for the engine?

Any plans for the engine?
Most likely a GTR swap. The 1.8 makes way more torque before getting into boost, which is exactly what this car needs. It already loves sliding around sideways in gravel though. wink

Protegay
what all does a gtr swap consist of? i've heard of it, but don't know much about the specs.

It's a 1.8L motor with a ball bearing turbo, forged rods and pistons, sodium filled exhaust valves, and the beefiest awd trans Mazda has put out. Running 28psi on megasquirt, it's not unheard of to hit just under 400 awhp on the stock engine/turbine. It's also $1800 for that swap, which is what I paid for the car. frown
