Bike Shopping

I'm trying to buy myself a somewhat decent road bike as my christmas present. $650 is the absolute most I can spend, and this is the bike I'm leaning toward getting. Opinions?

I need a bike that will last for at least 3 seasons without much work at all, and that will be able to train me for a century ride I'd like to try at the end of the summer/next fall.

Here's to honor.

That would probably work.  I'd probably look for something with at least Shimano 105-series components, but it'll probably cost a bit more.  Or you could just upgrade stuff whenever you have spare money.  That's what I've been doing with my primary bike for the last 4 years.

Checking out a 2011 trek 1.2 tomorrow afternoon after work. It has upgraded tiagra shifters and a Dura Ace 53T chainring. He said he may throw in a set of clipless pedals and shoes, but he's asking $725 and I've only got $650 so we'll see.

Bike looked brand new, it's a 2011 model. Had 16xx miles on it. Should I pull the trigger and get it? I've got pedals at home. I would definitely pick it up for $650 if it came with the clipless pedals he has on it now.

The things that I really like are:
1.) He's local, and he's on the cycling team, so I'll probably end up riding with him pretty soon. He'll be able to help me out and show me any quirks the bike might have/help me fix any issues that might arise.
2.) The size is perfect and it's a Trek instead of an online brand such as Motobecane, so I guess that gives it some quality points.
3.) Wheels were perfectly true
4.) I know he maintained it well because his house looks like a damn bike shop.

What is the guy's name selling that bike? That looks like my mom's house, and she and my stepdad owned a bike shop until a couple months ago.

The dude's name is Ryan, but I'm still up at school so I have a sneaking suspicion it wasn't your mom's house.

0? I don't know what you are talking about.

Anywho, I bought it with pedals, sans computer. $650.

Many people keep that many spacers to be able to dial in the right position of the stem. After you get the right position then you can be a weight weenie and cut off the rest of the steer tube!
Not that worried about weight, haha.

Is this the section you are talking about? Are those the spacers on the top? Why are they there if the handle bars are already at their lowest point?

You don't usually want the stem as low as it can go on the steerer tube. You get it set to the height that is most comfortable to you, then cut the steerer tube of the for off ~1/4" from the top of the stem.

Also, I just got Cosby'd for the first time.

^^^ thanks. Really excited about it. I had a shitty bike last summer that I loved to ride, so I can only imagine how great this will be.

My sister ran her first marathon in 4:08:xx about a month ago and it inspired me to do a century ride, so I think I was able to get a bike that could get me through it.

Trek is a good company and I noticed it had Bontrager components which is an excellent company. All around I would say it is a good buy.
I'd love to get into rising but don't even know where I start. Shit, I'd even like to just go to a park and watch lol.
Lucas, let me know if you want to pick up a bike. I can get you a decent deal on a complete if you pay with cash.

Might as well get a spinning bike, you'll spend the same amount.

But its not your bike. Fluid trainers not only help you train for stamina but get you used to your bike and get everything dialed in just right.  Trust me when I say you don't want to be adjusting your bars on the side of the road.
