old roadbike questions

I have an older roadbike I'm making a single speed since I'm bike-less and it's free. So I want a straight fork, not the bend at the end type. Is the geometry the same, meaning will it keep the tire off of the frame?

I've got to get the front sorted. New headset and fork then just finish cleaning the frame up for paint and a summer of riding smile

i know one thing you have to worry about with that if you shorten up the wheelbase, your front tire may hit your toe when turning....the only other thing is that it can make it have a more agile feeling, but some people say the handling feels weird...good thing i actually have a soft spot in my heart for fixies to be able to answer this for you
Getting rid of the bend in the fork shortens the offset, giving you quicker steering response (or agility like Andrew said). This may feel better at slower speeds, but can make it feel twitchy at higher speeds.

I would expect a former bmx guy to know these things. :p

I figured as much about the whole turning situation. I was more worried about the tire actually hitting the frame. I also never realized how cheap these bikes are to build. Now I see why they are so popular. I want a different wheel set now and a new fork on top of everything else haha. It's not a track bike, just something I can ride, my BMX has been scavenge for a handful of parts already for this build. Next up is a trailer so I can pull my daughter around  wooooo

I'll post a few pics once I get the stupid fork off the bike. screw on headsets ftl!!! Stupid keyed setup  HURRRRawww

i think its just going to depend on your frame geometry

Yeah for sure. I just didn't know if they have forks are different rakes to allow me something proper. I would rather have a full straight with rake than this no rake with the ends bent. Looks extremely dated.

mine are bent...but they match the frame which is an old school schwinn traveler. i feel its sacreligious to seperate them or paint them since the paint is in good condition...and i still have the bicycle license stickers on the seat tube

Do you have any pics? I have yet to see one that looked good to me.

My paint was trashed, lifting, pealing, de-laminating plus nicked all to hell. So....white and orange.....I wish the original badge was in good shape frown I wanted to leave it. I'm just glad the frame is straight. This is an addicting project, I hope to have it ride ready by the weekend.

The existing status. Still sanding the frame down. Some nicks are deep so I'm in the heavy grit stage to smooth them out. I want the paint to be flawless. I do realize I will trash it, but for it's deput departure I want it minty fresh haha.

This is how it looked before paint. Wheel set came off of Samantha's roadie.

You can spy my old jp cages haha. I need to find new baskets for them....if anyone has any leads let me know!

i can get you some tomorrow. its my new project though so theres no wheels or crank on it and the bullhorn bars are on there...not a fan of those bars.

Yeah I just cut mine with a hacksaw. Wasn't a fan of full rounds. Going to still wrap them. I think exposed bar looks neat but I like to ride a lot....would be a terrible move.

im gonna get some riser bars for mine since im tall. just like a 2" rise is all...nothing compared to my 10" rise on my bmx bike. is that the stock chainring? i think the stock ones look sooo much better than the anodized ones you see people riding around on. i wish i could use mine but one day when riding down first avenue my pedal fell out..the threads were completely stripped somehow on one crank arm. theres no chance on tapping it out either

Yeah it's the stock ring. Plans are to try and restore it's luster. It's got a really knarly cutout. My frame is a good size. I want to say it's a 58. Might be bigger. It feels larger than my tommoso did and it was a 58. The pic above was the test fit setup. I got everything where it felt comfortable to ride and did a few test laps to make sure it was solid. All the original bearings are even in good shape. Such a shame the paint wasn't salvageable. This talk about the fork might have convinced me to leave the oem on there. Now it's a matter of picking up a wheel set. I have the correct set, they just look gross in comparison. Plus with the gearset it doesn't really flow.

EBAY!!! thats where im getting mine from anyway. you can get a set right now for like $100 shipped for fixed gear. and it comes with tires on it as well.
heres the ones i have been looking at

Yeah I've been scouring eBay. Just need to find a good color combo for wheels and tires. Mot sire if I want a track style wheel yet. Really its going to come down to looks haha. Btw my frame is an old Atala

aerospokes are out of the question for me...wayyy too much money...but they look cool.  im going for the deep v look without the machined lips. im pretty sure im going to get this set but not 100% sure. http://cgi.ebay.com/WEINMANN-DEEP-V-TRACK-FIXED-GEAR-WHEELSET-WHEELS-ORANGE-/140516674357?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20b7724b35

btw i noticed that you too have the chrome on the bottom of the forks. my forks have that too...i guess it was a trend back in the day

Yeah. I guess the right thing to do would be to try and salvage the chrome.  Then if it looks bad I'll just paint it. The wheels you just posted look good. I'm taking it you are going fixed gear? I'll be rocking a single speed cassette and a brake of some sort. I was thinking of drilling through the frame and running a linear cable that route so the outside rails stay clean. If not I have the original cable frame tie brackets that aren't terrible. Just not my cup of tea.

Tomorrow my buddy is bringing over a few tools. Hopefully I can get the crank out without damaging it. I'd hate to destroy this badass vintage 3pc beast. Then I can spray the frame and reassemble the chassis and ride off doing one handed wheelies into the sunset haha.

yeah im going fixed gear...but im sure you know a freewheel can thread onto those hubs too. my bmx bike had holes that went through the tubs and it was cool...but i ride brakeless so it was pointless for me. i need to get my crank off the drive side, but its stuck on and i dont have a crank puller. i keep using a rubber mallet but with no luck. im about to just say screw it and start whacking it with a dead blow or something...not like the crank is useable anyway because the other side is stripped

I finally got the crank off. I thinned a socket on the grinder. Did more sanding. Still needs more cleaning before paint. Then prime and paint woot! Once paint is on I hope my hands feel like all this sanding was worth it. I think I want a white chain. Btw my crank is a a 2 piece Maxy.

im not even sure what mine was...but i bought a new one on ebay for like $30 from hawaii...itll be here in two days it says...which is stupid fast. actually about ten minutes after i bought it, they marked it as shipped. im assuming your bottom bracket is the tapered square? if so how did you get drive side crank arm off? oh and i bought my wheels...i decided to go with this set because i think it will look good with red

Yeah, it's square. I used 2 thick flat tip screw drivers, one on each side and I tapped them down equally with a rubber mallet until it broke free.

I'm just running short on free time with the baby....so I've decided to just get up early tomorrow and finish up sanding and start on paint. I'm gonna be bummer if I can't ride it this weekend.
