Ride @ Angel Mounds - 2009 Edition

This evening 3/9 I plan on either riding at Angel Mounds or USI for a couple of hours pending weather I suppose.  Anyone else going out today?

I was thinking about heading out to AM after work to see what the ground is like.  I could probably be there around 5:30 or so.  There's a chance of rain but it should be getting dark by then.

Dan, I changed the title of the thread slightly and set the post icon.  This can be our new "official" thread.  smug

Ohhhh, it is official now.  Yeah I'll be there probably closer to 6, It's a longer drive and I'll need a bit of time to get the bike rack set up on the car.

So here's the scoop.  The levee is dry, the short fun loop North of the levee is dry and the trail along the hillside that runs parallel to the levee on it's South side is dry.  If you ride down the levee and turn in at the first right by the Jesus book you can go all the way to just past the spot where it runs along the edge of the field before you hit mud.  Pretty much anywhere the logging trucks left ruts is a swamp, and the new wooden bridge has about 2 feet of water under it.

The trails look like a damn war zone from the ice storm.  I didn't even recognize the place.  Luckily someone has been out there with a chainsaw busting their ass and the trails are completely free of limbs.

And finally, a (bad) picture I stopped and took where I turned around:

Nathan found the dry parts, I found a ton of mud.  I still had fun but have a bit of cleaning up to do.  The ice storms did destroy the place though, it was kind of an eerie sight.  Hopefully the rain holds off and I can go again tomorrow or Wednesday.

Went back out for a bit today.  Stuff has actually dried up quite a bit in the last 24 hours.  Too bad we're going to get more rain. HURRRRawww

I did every dry section of trail twice and it was enough for me.  My legs weren't sore from yesterday but I can tell they will be tomorrow.

Snapped a few more pics while I was out there.

Man, that doesn't look wet at all.

I can't believe the damage, I guess the clearing of the trees helped dry it out.

Most of the stuff that has any kind of a slope to it is completely dry.  In the first and second pics, immediately behind me is a swamp.  If you ride all the way down the levee and take the last entrance on the right, this was facing back toward the levee.  I stopped right before the trail starts going back uphill and into the woods, where that gate to the actual park area is.

I went to usi for a bit this evening, pretty dry out there except for in the low areas.

Fags.

There are still some pretty sloppy/underwater areas but it was getting better until the rain tonight.  I rode several new sections of trail today that were mostly dry.  You can get all the way down to the boat launch again and the trails are in really good shape.  You can see the trail pretty well in most places but when it gets faint just look for the ribbons on the trees and follow them.  The new section is pretty fun. It's relatively smooth and in some of the twisty sections you have to dip your shoulder around trees.  I'm definitely glad it's back, as it adds quite a bit of length to the loop.  The entire trail is probably 50% longer now.  wooooo

I would love to be riding after work right now but 10 hour days are owning my life at this time.

Stupid rain is owning the trails.  At least Angel Mounds is going to be a more appealing destination this year...once it dries out.

Someone built a 6-foot gap jump ONTO the bridge now.  I'd trust myself to clear the gap, but I don't trust myself to land straight enough to STAY on the bridge.

As of right now the trail is about 97% rideable.  There were maybe 3 or 4 spots where I hopped off and walked the bike.  At least, until it rains tonight. HURRRRawww

For what it's worth, the southern most part is never going to be a suitable bike trail.

Those trails were still fine and rideable prior to the logging damage. What the tornado destroyed could be fixed, what the loggers destroyed is gone forever. Back in the day, the southern part always flooded at the slough but now the entire trail is useless until summer. We cut a switch back to connect the loop because the slough was always impassable. I've been back in there for 20 years, why they followed the log trails for hiking or biking is just stupid.

I'm not sure how you can condition a trail for biking or hiking that has 12" deep ruts and is 7' wide.

For the most part, the loop, which consists of the trails just north and south of the levee trail usually stay dry enough even in the heaviest rains.

By the end of the summer last year there was a pretty visible 'line' along the logging roads.  It even started to bed in and smooth out a bit.  I was really hoping the logging roads would start to get more overgrown on the edges but it's slow going.  As more and more people ride out there it should get better.

I agre, but you have to be able to get past the eastern slough
to work the trails. Once a crossing is in place, like the west end, it may get flowing again.

I went out to Angel Mounds this afternoon and it's about the same as last time.  Some of the swampy sections are getting a little better but the rain we're supposed to get this week is going to screw everything up again.  Hopefully it 'freshens' some of the bigger puddles out there because they're starting to smell like death.

I hate to be a downer but given how awesome Scales is (especially with the new trails and obstacles) I really don't feel the need to go to Angel Mounds ever again. It's seemingly always rough and covered with sticks, it's overgrown with poison ivy and the trails are just kind of ho-hum.

I guess if I lived closer I might not feel that way but by the time I get all my shit packed up and drive to Angel Mounds I'd be half-way to Scales so it's really not worth the effort for me.
