So i want a mountain bike...

i rode bmx for a while, i started out racing in the nbl series at age 9 and raced for some time, about 6 years. after that i rode at skateparks, but now my right shoulder is just screwed after riding so much and doing bunny hops over everything. so ive had to resort to riding road bikes. but this is getting a little boring and ive always wanted a mountain bike. i would like to be schooled on who around here sells them and whats a good starter bike. and oh btw im 6'1" so that can help with frame size(if mountain bikes go by sizes)
get a Sunday 24" cruiser and start riding Street.  wooooo

In another thread you can see the bike I bought this spring.  I too am 6'1" and opted to get a medium frame, though most would recommend you a large.

The two shops around here are Gilles Cycling and Fitness on south green river, that being the shop I patronize. Then there is Dans Comp in Mt. Vernon who sells mountain bikes out of their showroom, both great shops.

For a starter bike I would definably go check out the Gary Fishers they got in at Gilles, $450 for a well equipped hardtail w/ disks and Gary Fisher makes great frames.

Call or come up and talk to Derek or Alan. Those guys are really knowledgeable and can probably recommend you something to fit your needs and price range.

+1 for Dan's. I got my mountain bike there last year for about $400 or so and it's a "starter" bike I guess. I don't ride that much, and don't do anything crazy on it like jump off anything tall or go off any gnarly drops, and it's been fine.
I just went in to Dan's, told them what I was looking for and how much I had and walked out with a bike about 30 minutes later.

I'm 6'3" and ride a Large frame. It's a little bit small for me, but I make it work.

Check out the Cannondale F series. The F8 might be a good starter, but if you can up your budget the F5 is a good bike. Spend the most that you can afford because you will 'outgrow' a cheaper bike and you can end up spending a lot more money trying to upgrade to keep up with your needs (this is coming from a guy who rides an cheaper old bike, so take that with a grain of salt).

Zandr might unload his GT Ruckus frame.  That would be a great starting point.

sorry i havent replied. im still lookin, i went out to gilles, but the bikes seemed way overpriced. but it did kinda help me get an idea of want i would like.
I was out at Dan's on Saturday and saw some bikes in the $400 range.
so which is better, a frame with the suspension? or a solid frame?

For $400 and for a beginner, a hardtail(no suspension in the back) is best. That's what I ride. Any full suspension bike under $900 is going to have crappy parts and you are better off with a hardtail.

Yup. Great guy, and knows his shit.
