I don't think we've had a generic video game thread yet.  I thought we could use this to talk about what we're currently obsessed/playing/disappointed with.  There are several new games coming out that I'm really looking forward to:

Doom 4
Far Cry 2
Fallout 3

...and somewhere off in the distance GT5, but I have no hope of that being released any time soon.  In fact, I'll bet Forza 3 comes out before GT5.

I recently got Mass Effect for PC but my poor machine doesn't have the horsepower to run it.  I need to build a new machine but I have to take some heat off the credit card before that happens.

How about you guys?

The only game I play(and it's pretty much been this way since I bought it) is MVP Baseball 2005 for the PS2.  The rosters are super out of date now, but it's the most fun simulation baseball game ever.  I've played ones for 360, and I'll take the gameplay and smoothness of 2005 over shiny graphics and updated rosters.  If I'm not mistaken, EA Sports lost the MLB license and now all new simulation baseball games suck (hence why they made some NCAA baseball games which were good, but lost their fun because it's such a niche sport).

I wish I had a lot of money because NCAA Football 2009 looks killer.  Anyone want to sell me a 360 for 50 bucks?

I currently play the copy of GTA IV that I borrowed from you. Other times, I play Audiosurf while drunk with 3-D glasses. That's about the extent of it right now. Oh, and I play Super Monkey Ball on my iPhone while cursing at it for being outrageously difficult.

I would like to get Diablo III when it comes out but I refuse to pay for it. It just feels like giving money to the guy that sells crack to everyone in your neighborhood at this point. The crack-dealer being Blizzard and the crack being WoW, of course.

Still playing GTA IV.    GT5 Prologue is a great piece of what GT5 will eventually be,  but even with the grinding I still need to do to get the F2007 it won't hold my interest until GT5 comes out sometime before 2010.

I'm looking forward to Wii Sports Resort....because Wii games since No More Heroes/Smash Bros/Mario Galaxy back in March and April have been lacking.   Boom Blox was fun for a bit, but I can play puzzle games in flash all day long without paying $50 for them.

I am also looking forward to GTA - Chinatown Wars for the DS,  just to see how they do it.


The only game I can say I am salivating over is Diablo III.   No other game coming out will make me buy/build a new PC except for that one...and I won't even pirate it.


I will never pay for a game on my iphone, because iphone games are for homos.  Also, motion sensing is  great idea, but not when the motion sensing is attached the same screen you have to look at to play the game,  nothing like getting sick playing overpriced games on your telephone.

Don't forget about Rez. 

I'm mainly just playing Call of Duty 4 still and GTA4. We all need to get on one night and play GTA.

That sounds like a cool plan to me. My gamer tag is VeloxZX. Apparently I was still paying for gold all along despite not having a 360 for about a year.

you poor bastard- you just "bought" a game that you can only install 3 times before you have to answer to these guys. also ME sucks. i don't care how many glowing reviews it got; it is terrible. the combat is boring repetitive Gears Of War style thoughtless nonsense. the menu & item systems are unintuitive and lack any kind of useful descriptions. the skills & special abilities only vaguely affect gameplay and are mostly useless (at least in Knights Of The Old Republic you could actually use some of the force powers in combat - in ME the equivalents are completely unnecessary). the weapons are also entirely ghey and it doesn't take long to realize that the assault rifle is the only valid weapon. when you find an item, there is no way to know what its use is until after you've decided to pick it up. there are not enough alien species. when you gain access to the universe you will be amazed at the sheer number of planets, but that joy will quickly dissipate when you find that ~20% of them are explorable.

i will concede that ME is a very pretty game that does have some cool features (eg: after combat the game saves you a lot of time by auto-looting all dead enemies). the main story line is ok, but ALL sidequests are pointless and way too time-consuming. some more bad things: the stupid vehicle you keep having to drive refuses to obey the laws of physics; different responses to some questions or situations will often lead to the same results (wtf?); the "hacking" minigame is just as retarded as the one in Bioshock; and perhaps what irritated me the most was the level layouts for every sidequest were EXACTLY the same. seriously. you enter some cave and it is exactly like the last three caves, only filled with different enemies. inexcusable imo.

but i only played through 60-75% of the game before uninstalling it, so maybe it gets totally awesome at the 80% mark

my thoughts on a few upcoming games:

Diablo 3: i played D1 back in the day on the original PS & had a good time. i've never played D2. D3 looks really pretty & i'm fairly certain i will buy it because Blizzard seems to really care about releasing quality games.

StarCraft 2: never played the original game, but the fact that people are still playing it 10 years after its release is pretty incredible. will definitely check out the sequel.

Fallout 3: i get the feeling that this is going to disappoint. the latest gameplay footage did not impress me.

Spore: i've been following this game's development for years and am very sad that it is probably going to infect hundreds of thousands of computers with DRM spyware. unless EA comes to its senses before the release date, i will be forced to bypass their anti-piracy measures by pirating the game (irony!).

Left 4 Dead: lame name, but whatever - this is going to be game of the year (if Valve actually makes their Nov 4 release date ROFL!). it's a first person multiplayer cooperative survival horror game.

yeah mass effect sucked IMO and diablo isn't gonna cost every month. i'm not sure where you got that idea. WoW is just like that because it's a constantly updating MMORPG and they supposedly need the money to upgrade servers, add new crap. etc.

When have I ever made a 100% serious post on here? I fully realize Diablo III is not an MMORPG, THE REAL DEAL. I was just badly pointing out that WoW has made half of the people I knew in the world turn into gold and XP-seeking zombies and I blame Blizzard. In fact, I think we should declare war on MMORPGs and imprison all small-time video game retailers and the players of said games even if they have kids or other responsibilities in their lives. MMORPGs are a social menace and must be expunged. This would greatly help the problem as has been seen before.

let's start a team killing guild in WoW and piss everyone off so bad that they all want to quit! wait..... then we'd be playing. nevermind. there's a guy at toyota that almost got fired because of his WoW addiction.

Fallout 3 will be the best game EVER even if it sucks.

I'm bummed to hear what everyone has had to say about Mass Effect.  I hate when they dumb a game down to make it console-able.  I was really hoping this game would be as good as the KoToR games (except with an ending).

i'm looking forward to fallout 3 too. i'm not really hot on the first person aspect of it but it still looks pretty sweet.

Um.  I think that's about it.  I traded in forza 2, katamari, and lego starwars to preorder Too Human and the fancy edition of Fable 2.

Only game I currently own is GTA and somebody is borrowing it :P  so I've been playing the Too Human Demo, and Fable that I downloaded. from Xbox Live.

That Too Human demo is awesome. I may look into that when it comes out.

That was the 3rd time I've owned Forza 2.  I keep re buying it lol.  I guess I should have just learned my problem and kept it.  but I got tired of playing it again so I traded it in.

I'd be down but I'm really trying to get something finished. That's an awesome idea for sometime this weekend or something though.

I'd be down for some GTA online but no one has a PS3....
