What I meant by complimentary oil services are when you buy a car brand new, most companies will sell it with a 2 year/ 30k mile service plan. Basically instead of BMW changing the oil 3 or 4 times at 7.5k miles, they figured they could cut costs in half by saying it only needs service every 15k miles. Now you'd be lucky to find an e46 or anything newer than that without substantial sludge in the motor.
I don't see any reason to use synthetic unless you're driving a newer vehicle that requires it. Conventional oil does the job just as well and is cheaper. Currently have 560k+ miles on my honda using valvoline 5w-30. Motor has never been apart, just basic maintenance and oil change every 3k miles. |

I don't really understand how one sample of oil is going to determine the wear on an engine. I could see it being accurate if it was sampled at every oil change and compared over time but just one sample isn't going to determine much. Each brand of oil has different blends of certain elements like zinc and could alter results that are compared to an average. If you're worried about engine wear just use an oil with zinc and phosphorus, its been proven to prevent engine wear. A magnetic oil drain plug is a nice cheap alternative to checking engine condition as well. Steve- I wouldn't go over 7.5k miles on any of the new synthetic oils even if it says they are good for 15k miles. BMW was the first to implement the complimentary 15k mile oil services on the e46's, Z3's, x5's, etc. I'll take a pic of what the motors look like without a valve cover. Sludge everywhere even on motors with less than 50k miles on them. Good to know. And what do you mean by complimentary oil changes? My dad paid to have his oil changed when the car was inspected at Dpat a couple weeks ago. OAN, guess I'm now due for an oil change. It's been 6 months and 6000 miles since my last change. |

No.
German Castrol is the only ACEA certified Castrol oil, which is just the more stringent European oil standards. Regular Castrol Edge (formerly syntec) is still fully synthetic, just not ACEA, only API (American cert). German Castrol is available in several weights, not just 0w-30 from 0-10w and 20-40 in all combos. |

I read German Castrol is the really only true full synthetic castrol and it's only available in 0w30. Truth?

Depends on where you buy it, 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 is $34 at Autozone/Advance and $23 at Walmart. Castrol runs from 20-25 depending on where it is.

How does the castrol compare in price to mobil 1? I normally use Mobil but if castrol is the same or cheaper I may switch.

It's now called Castrol EDGE SPT. Just have to make sure it says Made in Germany on the back for it to be the good stuff.
